How much nicotine is in your vape — and how does it compare to cigarettes?

A liquid's strength in mg/ml is milligrams of nicotine per millilitre, so a 2 ml pod at 20 mg/ml holds about 40 mg of nicotine. Comparing that to cigarettes depends entirely on what you compare: a cigarette contains far more nicotine than a smoker actually absorbs from it, and how much of a vape's nicotine reaches you varies with the device, the liquid type and how you puff. These disagree because they measure different things. Absorption varies with the device, whether the liquid is salt or freebase, and how you puff — so a single equivalence figure is a marketing convention, not a measurement.

Why there is no single equivalence number

Every page that answers this question with one number has quietly chosen a basis and not told you which. There are at least three, and they disagree by roughly a factor of six.

The first is nicotine content: how much nicotine is in the liquid, against how much is in a cigarette. This is straightforward division and the arithmetic is shown above. It is also the least flattering to the marketing.

The second is absorbed dose: how much nicotine actually reaches you. A smoker absorbs only a fraction of what a cigarette contains — most is destroyed by burning or lost in side-stream smoke. Vaping has no combustion, but delivery still varies enormously with the device, whether the liquid is salt or freebase, and how deeply and often you inhale. That fraction is not printed on any label, which is precisely why an absorbed-dose comparison cannot be read off a pod.

The third is the packaging convention — the "600 puffs, equivalent to 20 cigarettes" line. That is a marketing equivalence based on puff count, not a measured dose, and it is worth reading as advertising rather than as data.

Salt versus freebase at the same strength

Nicotine salt and freebase liquid at the same mg/ml contain exactly the same amount of nicotine. What differs is how the vapour feels.

Salt formulations are smoother at high strengths, which is why disposables are usually salt-based at 20 mg/ml — a freebase liquid at that strength would be harsh enough to be unpleasant. The practical consequence is not chemical but behavioural: people frequently inhale more of the smoother one, more often, without noticing.

This is also why dropping to a lower mg/ml does not automatically mean taking in less nicotine. Compensation is well documented in smoking research and reported by vapers too — when each puff delivers less, many people simply take more puffs. If you are stepping down, tracking how much you actually use is what tells you whether the reduction is real.

What the number is actually useful for

Comparing yourself to a smoker is the least useful thing this arithmetic does. You are not trying to become a moderate smoker.

Where it earns its keep is as a baseline for a step-down. Milligrams per day is a figure you can lower deliberately, and unlike a cigarette equivalence it does not depend on assumptions about anyone else's absorption. Halving your mg/day is a real, measurable change; being told you are "a 20-a-day equivalent" is not.

If you are considering nicotine replacement — patches, gum, lozenges — the dose questions there belong with a pharmacist or a stop-smoking service, who can match it to what you actually use rather than to a converted figure.

What this tool can't do

  • It does arithmetic on a label. It cannot tell you how much nicotine you personally absorb, because that depends on the device and how you inhale, and no calculator can measure it.
  • The cigarette comparison is a range with three different bases, not a single equivalence. Anyone quoting one number has picked a basis without telling you.
  • It cannot tell you whether you are dependent, or how quickly to reduce. Those are questions for a clinician, a pharmacist or a stop-smoking service.
  • It gives no dosing advice for nicotine replacement therapy or any medication.
